John DeFilippo – Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator

November 4th – NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport: “How about John DeFilippo – the Vikings OC, the former Browns staffer and someone who is highly thought of in the NFL. That’s a potential candidate.”

John DeFilippo is likely to be at the top of many vacant head coaching lists by the time the off-season rolls around. His offensive prowess is well-respected, and he would be the fourth-youngest current NFL head coach at the age of 40 if he becomes a head coach this off-season.

DeFilippo has been a NFL quarterbacks coach for eight seasons and a NFL offensive coordinator twice. He was the Browns offensive coordinator in 2015 under Mike Pettine. Despite the stats not showing it, DeFilippo’s coaching was impressive with the talent he had on the offense that season.

DeFilippo was the Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach from 2016-2017, and he was instrumental in Carson Wentz’s quick development into being a MVP candidate. Wentz has developed much quicker than many anticipated he would, and DeFilippo was vital in helping him. Many give him credit for also building an offense around Nick Foles’ strengths and helping lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory after Wentz suffered an ACL injury.

Currently, DeFilippo is the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator, and the unit is ranked 12th in the NFL in total yards.

Understanding how much DeFilippo helped groom Wentz, it would not be a surprise to see the Browns wanting him to coach up Mayfield. With his history of work with young quarterbacks, he should be at the top of the Browns wish-list.

DeFilippo has Ohio roots, and he may want to return to the state for his first head coaching opportunity. The main question would be if Haslam burned any bridges with DeFilippo after the tumultuous 2015 season. But the opportunity with the Browns could be too hard for him to pass up.
