Josh McDaniels – New England Patriots offensive coordinator

October 17th –  The MMQB’s Albert Breer: Josh McDaniels would be an “obvious candidate” – via Keith Britton

November 1st – Via ESPN Cleveland: “Who is the favorite? Mike [Florio] says Josh McDaniels”

November 4th – NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport: “Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. I know that sounds crazy considering he pulled out of the Colts job last year. I am told that he is open to potential head coaching opportunities.”

Josh McDaniels has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way in his NFL coaching career. During his time as the Denver Broncos head coach, he was caught in a scandal when a member of the Broncos staff was videotaping an opponents practice. He also was seen as power-hungry, which caused a lot of strained relationships in Denver.

Also, during the 2017 off-season, after agreeing to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, McDaniels backed out of the deal a day before he was due to sign the contract. Before announcing he was backing out of the deal, he had filled out a large portion of his coaching staff.

Despite his history, McDaniels seems like a hot name for the Browns vacant head coaching job. His offense is routinely near the top of the league, and he has helped Tom Brady maintain his high level of play, even at the age of 40.

This season, McDaniels has led a top-ten offense with a revolving door at wide receiver and not having the depth that he usually has at running back. Also, Rob Gronkowski has been dealing with injuries all season and has not been available.

McDaniels almost became the Browns head coach in 2014 before he withdrew his name from consideration. He has Ohio roots, and to be able to come home and coach the Browns with a young quarterback could be hard for him to not seriously consider.

He may want a job where he has more power over personnel decisions, which he likely would not have in Cleveland with Dorsey at the helm. But with a young quarterback that is already showing the potential of being one the next best quarterbacks, McDaniels may not get a better opportunity in the near future.
