Mike McCarthy – Green Bay Packers head coach

November 4th: NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, “And a little bit of a wild card, Mike McCarthy in Green Bay. If things do not work out with McCarthy and the Packers, I would expect him to get significant interest this off-season.”

In the early part of this decade, Mike McCarthy was seen as one of the best head coaches in the league, and some believed that he had the potential to be one of the greats. And with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, it was going to be hard to slow the duo down.

But since the Packers won the Super Bowl in 2010, McCarthy has been seen as the weak link between the two, and many believe that he is holding Rodgers back from being the best quarterback of all-time. The belief is that McCarthy is too conservative, which ends up putting the Packers in holes during games.

McCarthy has been on the hot seat the past few seasons, and the Packers organization has made a good amount of changes recently. If the Packers miss the playoffs in 2018, the firing of McCarthy could be expected. And there is a decent chance that the Browns would be one of the first teams calling McCarthy.

McCarthy was the head coach in Green Bay when Dorsey was a part of the team’s personnel department – and don’t forget about Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith, who both came to the Browns from the Packers organization.

There is an obvious connection there, and Dorsey may prefer the proven track record of McCarthy building an offense around a first-round quarterback and succeeding instead of a young assistant or college coach.

McCarthy would also have a general manager that is more willing to spend money to add talent around the offense, compared to the Packers who prefer to develop home-grown talent. The Browns may be a perfect opportunity for McCarthy to repair his reputation.
