Stud: David Njoku

In recent weeks, David Njoku has gone silent for the Browns. He made just one catch in their win over Atlanta — although it was an impressive one-handed grab that went for 18 yards. Even so, he wasn’t breaking out the way it looked like he would with Baker Mayfield under center.

That wasn’t the case in this one. Njoku stepped up and proved to be a reliable target once again for the young quarterback. He finished the day with five receptions for 63 yards and a score.

His most impressive catch came in the second quarter when Njoku caught a pass in the red zone and tried to leap over defenders into the end zone. While he didn’t get in on his own, he was able to keep the play alive with his leap. The refs didn’t blow the whistle and several members of the team, including Kevin Zeitler, J.C. Tretter, and Duke Johnson merged on Njoku and shoved him in for a six-yard touchdown.

Njoku was a first-round pick out of Miami last season and was expected to be a huge part of the offense this season. He’s been solid and has more catches this season than last, but hasn’t taken that next step yet. Sunday could have very well been that for him as he’s really starting to earn Baker’s trust.
