Cleveland Browns: Studs and duds from Week 12 win vs. Bengals
By Randy Gurzi
Stud: Baker Mayfield
Earlier this week, Baker Mayfield let it be known that he wasn’t concerned about facing his former head coach. He was asked if Hue Jackson being on the opposing sideline would give Cincinnati some insight into what the Browns wanted to do. Mayfield responded with a simple “no” and wouldn’t expand on that any further.
It’s easy to see why he was so confident. This offense is simply not the same one Jackson and former offensive coordinator Todd Haley ran. New offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens has tailored things around Mayfield and he’s thriving.
After throwing three touchdowns in their win against Atlanta, Mayfield came back and had three more in the first half this week. He also put up more yards in this half than he did in four of his six games with the Hue/Haley combo according to a tweet from Jason Lloyd of the Athletic Cleveland.
Mayfield’s first half was the best since the Browns returned to the league in 1999 and he continues to prove he’s the real deal. He’s got some big-name coaches — like Bruce Arians — interested in a job that used to be a tough sell.
It’s safe to say the Browns made the right pick with Mayfield at No. 1 overall. It’s also safe to say they did the right thing getting a different set of voices in his ear with Gregg Williams and Kitchens.
