Cleveland Browns: Ranking all 29 Starting Quarterbacks before Baker Mayfield
By Cory Kinnan
5. Josh McCown
Here we are, the top five of a very abysmal list of quarterbacks. Making Cleveland the seventh team in his 13th year in the league, Josh McCown signed a three-year deal before the 2015 season after one season as the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Although the wins do not jump out as a quarterback worthy of being sixth on this list, winning only one of 11 starts, McCown’s leadership and grittiness during his tenure with the Browns will always be remembered favorably by coaches, fans, and teammates.
While wearing the orange and brown, McCown threw 18 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and he completed 60 percent of his passes, battling multiple shoulder and collarbone injuries. He finished with a total quarterback rating of 85.7 in Cleveland; compared to other quarterbacks on this list, McCown’s numbers make him look like a Hall of Fame candidate, especially considering the talent and coaching around him at the time.
McCown was released by the Browns two years into his three-year deal following the 2016 season. He is currently on his second contract with the New York Jets, being rewarded for his raw leadership, and is playing the role of backup and mentor to rookie Sam Darnold.
