5. Nick Chubb, Running Back

With the No. 35 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Browns selected University of Georgia running back Nick Chubb. He joined a crowded backfield which included free-agent pickup Carlos Hyde as well as Duke Johnson.

Chubb started the season as the backup to Hyde and was hardly used by former head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley. This made little sense as Chubb was visibly the more explosive back and should have supplanted Hyde.

Eventually, general manager John Dorsey forced the coaching staff’s hand by trading away Hyde, which made them use Chubb. The rookie didn’t disappoint as he ran for 80 yards and a touchdown in his first start. In Week 10, he set a franchise record for the longest rush with a 92-yard rumble against the Atlanta Falcons. He finished that game with 176 yards and a touchdown on the ground and through the air.

By Week 17, Chubb was flirting with 1,000-yards and even hit the plateau for a brief moment. Unfortunately, he was stuffed for a loss on his next carry and finished the season with 996 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

In his second season, we should see improvement from Chubb. He’ll start the year as the lead back and can get rolling early. The only thing that could stand in the way of him making the Pro Bowl could be Kareem Hunt, who is currently suspended but could challenge Chubb for the top spot when he returns. Should he be able to hold him off and remain the feature back for 16 games, he could be participating in the league’s All-Star festivities when the season ends.
