Jamie Gillan, Punter

Keeping our eyes on special teams, Scotland native Jamie Gillan could very well be the Browns’ punter come 2019 and beyond. The 21 year old who played for Arkansas Pine-Bluff in 2018 has one of the largest, most talented punting legs to come into the NFL this season. Not to mention, he is quite easily one of the coolest punters in the league’s history, earning the nickname “The Scottish Hammer” during his high school days.

As the story goes, Gillan brought four footballs to train for the NFL Draft during his pre-draft process. Not only did he grab more eyes than wide receivers, quarterbacks, and edge rushers, but his leg was powerful enough to pop all of them open. Other than Michael Dickson’s famous drop kick punt, that may be the most impressive feat a punter can have.

Not only is Gillan perhaps the most entertaining young punter in the league, but he is much cheaper than the Browns’ incumbent starter at the punting position. Currently, Britton Colquitt is on a four year, 11 million dollar contract with the Browns. The 34 year old has been terrific for the Browns during his time in Cleveland, but financially, it may be time to move on.

The Browns could move a lot of cap money by letting Gillan take the reigns in 2019. His OTAs were stellar, and by training camp, he may end up as the starter. Not bad for someone who was entirely rugby-focused until college.
