Most Passing Yards and Touchdowns

Here we look at two records for the Browns that were each set during Brian Sipe‘s MVP season back in 1980. The leader of the Kardiac Kids, Sipe had the best season of his career as he went for 4,132 yards passing with 30 touchdown passes. He led the Browns to a record of 11-5, but sadly saw their season end in the AFC Championship game on the infamous Red Right 88 play against the Oakland Raiders.

Sipe broke his own record for yardage, which he set the season prior as he had 3,876 yards in 1979. He also topped Frank Ryan‘s 29 touchdown passes, which was set back in 1966. The only players to come close since Sipe’s record-setting touchdown campaign are Derek Anderson and Baker Mayfield. Anderson had 29 touchdown passes in 2007 and Mayfield set a team rookie an NFL rookie record 27 touchdown passes in 2018.

Mayfield also set the team record for passing yards by a rookie, finishing with 3,725 on the year. What made that even more impressive was he did so despite not playing the first two weeks of the season. Mayfield relieved an injured Tyrod Taylor in the second quarter of their Week 3 game and never gave the job back.

In the games he did play, he averaged 266.1 yards per game, which projects to 4,256 over the course of a 16 game season. He averaged 1.93 touchdown passes, which would have been 30, or 31 if you round up, touchdown passes. Knowing he could have set both marks as a rookie makes it seem even more likely that he can do so in his second season, especially when you take the team’s offseason moves into consideration.

Cleveland hired Freddie Kitchens as their head coach after he and Mayfield showed great chemistry once Kitchens took over as the play-caller for the second half of the season. They also added Odell Beckham, Jr. which will give him one of the best receiving corps in the entire NFL.

Prediction: Baker breaks this record
