Can Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield be the best No. 6 to ever play in the NFL?
The Intangibles
Outside of talent and skill, there are two attributes a quarterback must have to achieve greatness. Baker Mayfield happens to possess both in spades.
The first attribute: Are you a leader of men?
Mayfield is unquestionably that. He didn’t have to grow into the role either. At the age of 23, he walked into an NFL locker room and by the end of his rookie season became the indisputable leader. It doesn’t matter if it’s a game, a practice, or a press conference, you know he is in control of this team. He was born to lead men.
The second attribute: Does your competitive fire drive you to greatness?
Mayfield checks that box emphatically. The great quarterbacks always have that inner drive. There can be no questioning Baker Mayfield’s competitive drive. It literally oozes out of him. Whether it’s him using slights, perceived or otherwise, to motivate himself, the team, and even the fans at times, or if it’s him jawing with opposing players, it is evident he lives to compete.
His bigger the game or situation, the bigger the stakes attitude is what he uses to rise to the occasion when the lights are the brightest. When you combine that competitive fire with his leadership, it gives him the ability to pull the rest of the team up to his level. These are truly special characteristics.
