Cleveland Browns: 3 Undrafted rookies to watch at training camp
By Randy Gurzi
1. Willie Harvey, Linebacker
The last undrafted rookie to keep an eye on is the latest to join the team. Cleveland gave Iowa State linebacker Willie Harvey a tryout during rookie minicamps and ended up signing him to a deal. He now joins a team that’s been trying to build up their depth at his position.
In 2018, the Browns suffered injuries at linebacker as both Joe Schobert and Christian Kirksey missed time. Schobert returned after a few games but Kirksey ended his season on IR after playing in just seven games total.
John Dorsey then went out in the offseason and added competition with free-agent signing Adarius Taylor and draft picks Sione Takitaki and Mack Wilson. With three new arrivals, it would seem as though Harvey has a big road ahead of him to make the roster, but it’s not impossible.
Should Cleveland keep seven linebackers, he would be competing with Ray-Ray Armstrong for the final spot. His youth should help him in that endeavor, but the most important factor in him making the squad is whether or not he can perform on special teams.
An undersized linebacker, Harvey had a nose for the ball with the Cyclones and that could come in handy while chasing down return men. If he can prove adequate in this area during training camp and the preseason, he could potentially have a job with the Browns.
