Backup Wide Receivers

The Browns have their starting wide receiver group set for the season. The best friend tandem of Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, combined with Baker Mayfield‘s favorite target Rashard Higgins, could make for one of the most potent passing offenses in the NFL. But with the news of receiver Antonio Callaway‘s four-game suspension coming out earlier this week, Cleveland is officially in the market for backup wide receivers.

The preseason will likely determine the fate of the back end of the receiving roster, especially games two and three. If the second-stringers can prove themselves, then the best among them will almost certainly take Callaway’s place for the first quarter of the season. Derrick Willies and Damion Ratley look like prime candidates for the job, but Browns fans could find themselves with a couple of dark horses.

D.J. Montgomery looked solid in the latter half of the first preseason game, catching a touchdown against the Redskins from fourth-string quarterback David Blough. Offseason signing Jaelen Strong seems to have recovered well from his ACL injury last season, and coming on strong this preseason would only help his chances.

The Browns don’t have a receiver problem, but it certainly couldn’t hurt to sort out their depth. In Callaway’s absence, one receiver will get a chance to prove himself with the first team. Let the games begin.
