2. Both kickers

The Browns have themselves a close kicking competition going on right now, but not for the right reasons. Both second-year kicker Greg Joseph and rookie Austin Seibert have been struggling so far in the preseason.

Joseph was originally leading the way as he was much more consistent than Seibert during camp but then opened the door for the fifth-round pick when he missed an extra point attempt in Week 1. He then added a miss from 53-yards out as the first half expired. Seibert wasn’t able to separate himself though, as he then missed on a fourth-quarter try — which was his first field goal attempt of the preseason.

Freddie Kitchens is starting to feel the frustration and let the kickers know he wasn’t happy when speaking about the problem after the game. When discussing these woes, it was asked if maybe the holder has been an issue. Undrafted rookie Jamie Gillan has been working on that job as has veteran Britton Colquitt, but Kitchens kind of dodged that questions while saying he needs a kicker who can execute.

"“I don’t know about that,” said Kitchens via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “I know this, it didn’t go through the upright. I know there are no excuses coming from that room. Their job is to put the ball through the upright. I don’t care who is holding. I can go out there and hold it for them, and it better go through the upright. That’s their job.”"

Kitchens is right that there doesn’t need to be an excuse made up. The kickers need to start delivering or else they could go out and find a replacement — something they did early in the 2018 season. It’s not ideal, but there’s too much talent on this team to be held back by the kicking game.
