Safety J.T. Hassell

Browns safety J.T. Hassell has been an inspirational story since joining the Browns as an undrafted rookie over the offseason. Hassell was born with two fingers on his left hand, but he has been able to make plays even with what some might call a disadvantage.

Hassell has been on the field often for the Cleveland Browns, playing many snaps on defense, but also having a significant presence on special teams. And he has taken advantage of the time on the field, as he is tied for the team lead in tackles during the preseason. With 11 total tackles, Hassell is tied for the team lead with another rookie safety, Sheldrick Redwine.

Although his chances of making the 53-man roster are slim because of the Browns’ depth at safety, Hassell has emerged as an intriguing option for Cleveland’s practice squad. Hassell has good momentum leading into the Buccaneers game after making an impressive interception during Tuesday’s practice.

With most of the starters expected to play Friday, Hassell will need to make some plays on special teams to stand out until he gets a chance at defensive snaps during the second half. But based on the trends of training camp and the preseason so far, that should not be a problem for Hassell.
