Dud: Travis Vornkahl

Rookie offensive tackle Travis Vornkahl had a rough series neat the end of the second quarter for the Browns. His first mistake came when he was called for an illegal block above the waist. That play negated an eight-yard gain on a pass from Garrett Gilbert to Braxton Miller.

On the next play, Vornkahl possibly tried too hard to make up for his mistake. On an attempted screen pass, the ball ended up being popped up into the air. Vornkahl had a shot at knocking the ball to the ground which would have made sure they had a shot at converting a 3rd-and-13. Instead, the West Texas A&M product caught the ball and tried to run it up the field.

That led to a loss of seven yards, which put them back at their own nine for a third-and-20. That’s when the young man made the biggest mistake of his night and he was then called for illegal use of hands in the end zone which finished the drive for the Browns with a safety, giving the Lions two points for free.

Throughout the preseason, the offensive line has been an issue for this team. That’s why general manager John Dorsey went out and traded for Wyatt Teller on Thursday from the Buffalo Bills. While it was a rough night for Vornkahl, he surely hasn’t been alone on that line and hopefully, he’s not judged too harshly for this series.
