Cleveland Browns: 3-Step blueprint to Week 2 victory over Jets
By Randy Gurzi
3. Don’t take the backup lightly
Of course, it’s easier to win when the backup quarterback is in the game, and that will be the case on Monday Night. The New York Jets will be without Sam Darnold for a while as he came down with mono and won’t be able to play. With that being said, the Jets are actually pretty strong at backup quarterback.

Trevor Siemian will make his first start for New York on Monday night, but it won’t be the first start for the young signal-caller. A former seventh-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2015 out of Northwestern, Siemian ended up taking over for Peyton Manning when he retired.
He held that job for the majority of the next two seasons and started 24 games. Overall, he won 13 and lost 11 and showed he can light things up when teams take him for granted. One example was in 2017 when he threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-17 rout of the Dallas Cowboys.
With that being said, Siemian is a player capable of keeping a team treading water. He’s never been able to sustain success long enough to keep a starting job long but he’s easily one of the best No. 2 quarterbacks in the NFL.
Cleveland can’t head into this one acting as though they have it won simply because there’s a second-stringer under center. Siemian may not have the arm that Darnold does, but he has a better understanding of the game and can take advantage of a team that comes in expecting things to be easy.
