What needs to change?

The Browns need to solidify their approach to Baker Mayfield and the offense. Beyond that, Mayfield needs to look more refined next week.

He struggled with looking for the deep ball and failing to hit check downs. This caused him to hold on to the ball too long and take sacks. The offensive line is already struggling, Baker needs to play in a way that helps them out. The playcalling needs to help them as well.

Baker needs to run the Air Raid the way the Kansas City Chiefs run it. They look to establish the quick passing game. They know teams will take away the deep ball. Thus, they throw a lot of quick passes and screens as their opening volley.

Having pounded the defense for yards, opponents’ safeties cheat up to help with the short passing game.  Once the quick passing game is established, the deep shots become open. Baker Mayfield needs to take a page out of Patrick Mahomes‘ book on quarterbacking the Air Raid system. The coaches need to coach Baker to play this way too.

As for the running game, the Browns might want to run more pistol formation. It would give Baker the extra space he likes. It would also put Chubb in a position to run downhill.

More than anything, the Browns need to commit to an offensive philosophy. They were built to be an Air Raid team. Built from the head coach to the offensive coordinator down through the players. The Browns need to be what they have already committed themselves to being, an Air Raid offense.
