Cleveland Browns 7-round mock draft after 1st quarter of the season
By Randy Gurzi
With the first of two picks in the seventh round, the Browns add more beef to their defensive line with Marlon Davidson. The Auburn defensive lineman has the ability to play both defensive end as well as tackle. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 278-pounds, he may be a little light for the tackle position — at least on early downs. However, he could slide into that role in passing situations.
A solid athlete, Davidson really excels in run defense. He’s hard for blockers to move and is great when it comes to setting the edge. He’s the kind of player who will do the dirty work that doesn’t show up in the box score — and every team needs plenty of those players.
For Cleveland, they have done a great job rebuilding this line as well. In 2017, they added Myles Garrett and Larry Ogunjobi to the line with the No. 1 overall pick (Garrett) and the 65th (Ogunjobi). This offseason, they added Sheldon Richardson to the group in free agency and Olivier Vernon in the draft.
This gives them one of the best starting defensive lines in the entire NFL and so far this season, their depth seems much better than the prior year. Chris Smith continues to be an underrated veteran and they’ve seen a huge jump in performance from Chad Thomas and Devaroe Lawrence.
Adding Davidson continues to build depth and competition to what’s quickly becoming a strength of the team.
