Cleveland Browns 7-round mock draft after 1st quarter of the season
By Randy Gurzi
The biggest surprise so far in the early weeks of the Browns season has been the play of their cornerbacks. With Denzel Ward making the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2018 and the team adding Greedy Williams the expectations were through the roof. However, it hasn’t been those two who have slowed down the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens passing attacks the past two season.
Instead, it’s been Terrance Mitchell, T.J. Carrie, and Juston Burris making plays for them as Ward and Williams have missed the past two games due to injuries. This is a testament to the depth that John Dorsey has put together in the secondary as they have continued to roll even with the starters sitting out.
With their final pick in this 2020 NFL Mock Draft, Cleveland adds more depth with Chase Lucas from Arizona State. Lucas is slightly undersized at just 175-pounds. He does have the kind of length that defensive coordinator Steve Wilks loves though, and has never shied away from contact even with his size.
As a freshman, Lucas had 59 tackles and two picks. He added another 62 tackles, six for a loss, with two sacks and three more interceptions.
He’s not guaranteed to make the roster — it usually is a hard road for late-round picks — but his nose for the ball could help him as he fights for a role on the team.
