Dud: Baker Mayfield

Another week and another poor performance from Baker Mayfield. After dominating the Ravens defense during Week 4, Mayfield returned to looking lost and not hitting his receivers when they were open.

Although the offensive line was a major problem and did not give Mayfield much of a pocket to work with, Mayfield struggled with his accuracy once again Monday night. There were several times Mayfield overthrew open receivers, forcing incompletions.

Mayfield finished the game completing only eight of his 22 pass attempts for 100 yards, while also throwing two interceptions. Both of Mayfield’s interceptions were intended for Antonio Callaway, with the second being mostly the fault of Callaway.

Mayfield was also sacked four times for 42 yards. The Browns signal caller lost a fumble while trying to scrambling out of the pocket, but fumbled because he was scrambling carelessly and was not protecting the football.

The second-year quarterback has struggled to start the season, and it is not just one issue. He is jittery in the pocket, is careless when scrambling, has made some questionable decisions throwing the football and is dealing with a lot of accuracy issues. Most of those issues were apparent against the 49ers.

If the Browns want to get their offense going, a lot of it falls on the shoulder of Mayfield. Once Mayfield can clean up his mistakes and execute better, the offense can make plays, as shown by their performance against Baltimore. But if he doesn’t, then the offense can look a lot like they did against the 49ers.
