Eric Murray needs to be a shutdown corner

So far this season the Browns have played a lot of zone coverage. With most of the secondary working through injuries and only now starting to return to the lineup, it is not a surprise the Browns have not used man-to-man as their main coverage scheme.

The Seahawks have a very productive slot receiver in Tyler Lockett. Lockett is one of Russell Wilson’s favorite targets and is the main target on the field for Wilson. If there is a big passing play, Lockett is usually the one involved.

The Browns starting nickel Eric Murray will be called upon to deal with Lockett on a regular basis. Murray has been playing well. But asking him to cover Lockett man-to-man should not be something he is asked to do on a regular basis.

There is the hope that starting corners Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams will return to the starting lineup this week. They have returned to practice. However, hamstrings are finicky injuries. It may be better for the Browns and the players for them to sit until after the bye week. But head coach Freddie Kitchens did send Antonio Callaway into the 49ers game when he wasn’t ready. So, you never know.

We do know that Murray is the current nickel corner. He, and the entire secondary, will have their hands full with Lockett and the Seahawks receiving group.
