Round 6, Pick 178: Jonathan Garvin, EDGE, Miami

Building more depth, the Browns take an edge rusher in the sixth round from their favorite school to select players from. Due to Alonzo Highsmith’s connection to the University of Miami, the Browns have taken a Hurricane in each of the last two drafts since he has come along in Chad Thomas and Sheldrick Redwine.

Here they do it again, taking Jonathan Garvin to give Olivier Vernon and Myles Garrett a breather off the edge. When Vernon and Garrett are off the field, the Browns have inexplicably been benching Genard Avery and opting for Thomas and Chris Smith; adding another option could be of much help to the brown and orange defensive front.

The Miami pass rusher is coming off of a sophomore season where he tallied a massive 17 tackles for loss and five and a half sacks for the Hurricanes. This year, however, he has taken a bit of a step back, recording only two tackles for loss and a sack as a junior; Highsmith loves himself an underperforming Hurricane though.

With their sixth-round pick, since they have decided to cast off Avery after a promising rookie season, the Browns add Garvin to give themselves some depth off the edge.
