Defensive Player of the Year: Joe Schobert

Team captain Christian Kirksey was supposed to help form one of the best linebacking units in the entire NFL. However, Kirksey injured his bicep after a Week 2 matchup with New York Jets and will miss the rest of the season.

With Kirksey’s absence, Joe Schobert has stepped up in a major way. Schobert is tied for the league lead in total tackles with perennial All-Pro Luke Kuechly, sitting at 62 tackles through six weeks.

The Browns defense has had issues with the run game. They have allowed 170 yards or more in each of the last three games. Schobert has done his best to hold down the fort without Kirksey, but it has been a tough task. Schobert has played 100 percent of the defensive snaps this season, with most coming alongside rookie linebacker Mack Wilson.

Schobert is in a contract season and will need to continue his Pro Bowl-level play if the Browns hope to right the ship, and if he hopes to cash in during the offseason. This is the second consecutive season-ending injury early in the year for Kirksey, which makes Schobert more valuable for the Browns. But as of right now, Joe is one of the most essential defenders on the field.
