Most Valuable Player: Myles Garrett

Myles Garrett is easily the team’s MVP. Garrett has nine sacks this season and is tied for the league lead. He is also third in quarterback hits. He started the season with three personal foul penalties during Week 1 and Week 2, but since has only been flagged for offsides. Garrett has recognized when to pull off of the precious quarterbacks, and it has paid off for him and the Browns.

The Browns are ninth in the NFL in defensive third-down conversation rates. That is mostly due to the pressure applied on third downs, and Garrett has a lot to do with it.

Sacks aren’t the only thing he brings to the table. The opposing offense has to account for where Garrett is at all times. When defending Myles, you must chip block or leave a running back in the backfield to help, or the opposing offensive tackle has no chance of stopping him. Garrett only has one game without a quarterback pressure, a game in which he says he was containing Lamar Jackson and not rushing him.

Garrett is an exceptional talent and potential candidate for NFL Defensive Player of the Year. It’s an award he’s after, and if he continues to play like this, it is an award he could obtain by season’s end. The Browns’ defense has a lot to fix before their matchup with the New England Patriots, but Garrett is the last player to worry about. He has been the MVP of this team.
