Dud: Freddie Kitchens

The Browns had a prime opportunity to surprise a lot of people against the Patriots because they were coming off a bye week. Having the extra week to prepare for New England should have given Cleveland a better shot on Sunday. Instead, it seemed like the Browns were coming off a short week.

Freddie Kitchens continues to struggle with the game management aspect of being a head coach and he made several questionable decisions against the Patriots. Whether it be using both of his challenges on plays that should not have been challenged or his decision to have his punt unit take a penalty on 4th & 11 so he can go for it on 4th & 16, Kitchens was clearly overwhelmed on Sunday.

The Browns also continued with their season long battle of being undisciplined and taking several penalties, committing 13 penalties on Sunday.

One of the biggest problems with Kitchens as head coach is the entire team lacks attention to details, which is a sign of poorly prepared team. Kitchens had two weeks to fix Cleveland’s issues and make sure they were prepared for Sunday, but the team lacked execution once again and there seems to be no progress being made.

It is fair to say Kitchens may not have been ready to become a head coach. But the most concerning aspect of Kitchens’ tenure so far is the Browns still lack an identity and there is no development to hang their hat on. Instead, it seems like Kitchens is winging it every week. And when facing detail-oriented teams like the Patriots, Kitchens’ flaws become very clear.
