5. Signing the Scottish Hammer

The Scottish Hammer, whose real name is Jamie Gillan, was a great signing by the Browns this season. They have a terrific hard nosed punter who brings a rugby player’s mentality to the team and is not afraid to make tackles on punt coverage. — which he did several times in the preseason as he battled with veteran Britton Colquitt for the job.

And did you see the drop kick he used for the on-sides kick  against New England?  The receiving team cannot tell which way the ball is going to go, so the Browns have a better chance of recovering the ball. They may not have gotten it that time but it will work eventually.

At the same time, they had too much money invested in Britton Colquitt. Colquitt was a very good punter, but one whose $2.8 million dollar salary would have placed him around seventh in the NFL. By contrast, Gillan makes just a little more than  the NFL minimum salary at $498 K.

Incidentally, the Vikings were able to sign Colquitt for only $930,000, and actually a little bit less since he did not start the season with them.

Gillan has a monstrously strong leg and is only going to get better as he is still learning his trade. That makes this an excellent move by Dorsey.
