3 Matchups to watch as Cleveland Browns host Buffalo
2. Cleveland wide receivers vs. Buffalo secondary
This is not a strength on strength matchup — well at least not so far this season. We all know that the Browns receivers are talented but they haven’t produced this season, scoring just two touchdowns. There are a variety of reasons why Cleveland’s passing attack hasn’t been effective but not too much blame can be placed on the receivers, this offense has been out of whack all season.
Buffalo’s secondary has been the opposite. They’ve made plays all over the field and have shut down the other team. It starts with the leadership at safety by Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. Poyer is a thumper in the run game and will separate a receiver from the ball and is second on the team in tackles with 57.
Hyde flys around the back end and keeps everything in front of him. Tre’Davious White might be the most talented player in the secondary. White is physical in the run and pass game and leads the team with three interceptions. White has been one of the more underrated cornerbacks in the league the past few years, probably because he plays in Buffalo.
That might also be why you haven’t heard of the rookie on the other side, Levi Wallace. Wallace has been a good corner this year as he has broken up six passes which is the most by anyone in their secondary. The Browns might have trouble getting their receivers the ball but the real show will come before the ball is thrown.
These receivers and secondary are both very physical and are not short on attitude. Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry had their best game as teammates last week but it is far from what they are capable of. It seems like the Browns are finally starting to find ways to get them the ball.
Antonio Callaway has also looked more like the player we saw last year as he tries to get back to form. The Bills have the third-ranked pass defense in the league so if Cleveland can have success passing the ball that would say a lot about the progress they are trying to make.
