Special teams block a field goal

There is no denying that the biggest turnaround that the Cleveland Browns have made from 2018 to 2019 is the play of their special teams. It’s the most overlooked aspect of football, but when you are the most consistent aspect of the team, it is impossible to not acknowledge their effort.

Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer was brought into Cleveland to do what he has been doing in the NFL for the last 13 years, molding his special team units into one that ranks in the top-tier of the league. Priefer spent the last eight years as the special teams coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings.

This offseason, Priefer accepted an offer to take the same position in Cleveland; which is also his hometown. Since he has arrived in Berea, there has been a noticeable difference in the level of discipline and execution of the special teams. The most noticeable difference has been the improvement of the kick coverage units.

This week, Priefer’s unit will take yet another step and make a game-changing play. The Browns will block their second field goal of the season. Back in Week 8, Denzel Ward was able to get his hands on a New England Patriot field goal attempt. Ward will once again be the culprit when he blocks a Zane Gonzalez field goal attempt. It will be the third block of Ward’s young career.
