3. It’s Judgment Day for Freddie Kitchens

The Haslams will have to let John Dorsey decide whether to pull the plug on Freddie Kitchens or to allow him time to develop. We all have a notion about how this is going to go.

This year’s team had an alarming tendency to get distracted from its objective of winning. At no time was this more evident than in the first Pittsburgh game, whether there were four separate breakdowns culminating in Myles Garrett being ejected and suspended.

It was not just the brawl at the end of the game. Their goal seemed to be to bully the Steelers instead of beating them on the scoreboard, and that was a horrific mistake. What good is it to have the best team in the NFL next year if the key pieces wind up on the commissioner’s suspended list? The Browns totally need to have their heads in the game, and that breakdown occurred at the coach’s level on down.

At this point, however, ownership needs to support John Dorsey as the guy who will make the call. Everybody drank the Kitchens Kool-Aid, but now there is a hangover and they have to decide whether they believe Kitchens can improve or whether he needs to be coaching in the XFL.

The Haslams will mull it over a little bit, but very likely Dorsey’s job is not in danger. He should be given another chance to get the right guy.

If that is the case, Jimmy and Dee should let Dorsey make the ultimate call on the next hire. Dee and JH3 will be involved in the process, but when push comes to shove it should be Dorsey who casts the decisive vote. Dorsey will also establish the process for hiring the next coach.

That call needs to be made in two weeks. Good luck to coach Kitchens. It’s been real.
