3. Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy

When Mike McCarthy was fired by the Packers before the end of last season, it seemed like he was destined to land with the Browns. With Cleveland’s front office coming from the Green Bay tree, dipping back into the Green Bay pool would not have been surprising.

However, McCarthy never really gained any momentum with the Browns last offseason. He did not gain any momentum for any job and spent the 2019 season at home. But that time at home has McCarthy appearing to be a hot candidate this offseason.

The end of McCarthy’s tenure with Green Bay was viewed poorly because he was unable to make deep runs in the playoffs despite having a top quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. His conservative offensive play-calling and not adjusting his offense to the current schemes held Green Bay and Rodgers back.

But during his time as a free agent coach, McCarthy has taken a deeper dive into analytics and has reinvigorated his playbooks. He has reinvented himself as a head coach and has caught up to the times of the current NFL.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

Having 13 seasons of experience as a head coach, McCarthy has seen it all in terms of game management. He is not going to panic about certain situations and would be a calm presence on the sidelines. Also having a Super Bowl on his resume will help get the respect of the veterans on the Browns roster.

McCarthy needed a fresh start and it allowed him to make changes. However, it remains a question of if McCarthy will fall back to his prior experiences as a coach instead of leaning on the new aspects of coaching he has learned. And how he mismanaged Rodgers towards the end of his tenure could create some concern about how he would handle Baker Mayfield.

With that said, McCarthy’s experience and learning from his mistakes makes him a good fit for the Browns. If he truly has changed his game planning, he could make his next job an incredible opportunity.
