2. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels

Every offseason seems like the time Josh McDaniels will finally leave New England and have his next opportunity to prove he can be a good head coach. However, organizations may be weary of pursuing McDaniels because of his past.

In the past two offseasons, McDaniels appeared to be leaving New England. Two offseasons ago, after accepting the offer to become the Colts head coach, he backed out just days before he was supposed to sign his deal. And after appearing to be the front-runner for the Green Bay job last offseason, he pulled out of consideration.

But with that said, Cleveland may be a job he cannot turn down. He grew up in Northeast Ohio and would have the opportunity to coach a young quarterback with tons of potential. He also would have an offense with talent at the skill positions. With his diverse and innovative scheme, McDaniels has been one of the top offensive minds in the NFL for several years.

McDaniels may have struggled in his first run as head coach, but at this point should have learned from his mistakes and has matured as a coach. He is an intelligent coach and his scheme has generally led to success, despite not having an offense filled with talent. His offense has struggled in 2019, but it could be the least talented team at the skill positions he’s coached.

The Patriots have the 16th-best offense in 2019, averaging 354.1 yards per game. But they have scored 26.4 points per game, sixth-best in the NFL. Even with the issues they have had on offense, McDaniels is still leading a solid unit.

The Haslam’s are rumored to have wanted McDaniels for several years. After giving John Dorsey full control of the last head coaching search and the Freddie Kitchens experiment that followed, the Haslam’s may finally want to get their guy in the next potential head coaching search.
