Sheldrick Redwine

Sheldrick Redwine finds himself in an interesting position as the 2019 season comes to a close. By all accounts, Redwine was supposed to spend this season as a ‘redshirt’ year. The hopes in Berea were that Redwine would be able to sit and learn how to play safety in the NFL while being a contributor on special teams.

But due to a few injuries and some ill-advised tweets, Redwine’s number was called to not only see the field as a safety but to take the lion share of snaps as well.

Was he ready? Probably not, but that’s life in the NFL. There were some missed assignments and few bad angles as well as a being late on a couple of recognitions during his first game in Pittsburgh.

Redwine has since bounced back and has improved each week. Now, Redwine, like many on this Browns’ team is auditioning to show that he is here to be part of the franchise’s future going forward.

The University of Miami product shares a few similarities to former Browns safety Jabrill Peppers. Redwine, like Peppers, is being asked to play more deep coverage as a rookie as opposed to where he feels more comfortable in the box.

This experience could aid Redwine by making him a more well-rounded safety and improve his versatility going into 2020. This last game in his rookie season should be huge for Redwine’s development.
