Valued assets of 2018 depreciated in 2019

The great moves of John Dorsey in 2018 came from acquiring Mayfield, Ward, Chubb, Greg Robinson, Breshad Perriman and Damarious Randall. Everyone except Chubb had an off-year in 2019. Basically the reasons fans and writers were excited about Mr. Dorsey in 2018 are the same reasons they were disappointed in 2019

Dorsey looked like a genius in the second half of 2018, after the departure of Hue Jackson, because Nick Chubb started to assert himself and the offensive line suddenly became the stingiest offensive line in the NFL in terms of sacks allowed and quarterback hits allowed.

Chubb is having an All-Pro year and is surely a top-five star from the class of 2018. However, the others did not show similar progress.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

Mayfield’s 2019 season was nowhere near the level of the last eight games of 2018. Ward has been injured and missed some time. But when he returned, Ward’s performance did not match his 2018 level of performance.

Perriman was upset at being the third banana behind Jarvis Landry and OBJ and did not re-sign with the team. Instead, the Browns allowed Perriman to walk away from his deal and sign with the Buccaneers.

Adding Greg Robinson was a great move in 2018 because he played at a high level and stabilized the offensive line, which had a complete turnaround mid-season. But re-signing Robinson in 2019 was a negative as Robinson got himself thrown out of the Tennessee game in Week One. He was better as the season went on, but he led the team with 10 penalties. He was benched for one game in favor of Justin McCray–the latest in a series of Browns experiments to convert guards into tackles, which never works–but got his job back when McCray was ineffective.
