The Cleveland Browns have been busy this week and that will continue as they plan to interview Mike McCarthy on Thursday, even without a general manager

Things have gotten hectic in Berea this week. Just days after firing head coach Freddie Kitchens, the Cleveland Browns decided to part ways with John Dorsey.

The general manager came on board in December of 2017 and vowed to get “real football players” to wake the sleeping giant in Cleveland. He made some great moves but also took some big gambles, which included hiring the inexperienced Kitchens.

In the end, it proved to be his downfall and team owner Jimmy Haslam has decided to move on. But that doesn’t mean they will be putting the coaching search on hold. In fact, they’re even set to interview someone that worked with Dorsey in Green Bay and was a candidate last year.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com says the Browns will interview Mike McCarthy on Thursday.

The Super Bowl-winning coach was one of the finalists a season ago and many thought he would be the hire. Not only does he have the prior relationship with Dorsey but McCarthy helped Aaron Rodgers develop into one of the best quarterbacks in the game.

In Cleveland, McCarthy would be asked to help Baker Mayfield refine his game as the No. 1 overall pick from 2018 took a step backward in his second season.

There’s no word on what kind of structure the team would have but if McCarthy lands the job, it would be safe to assume he will help select the general manager. Allowing that would prevent any issues that the team had in the past where everyone answered directly to Haslam causing confusion and tension.

McCarthy has the experience and clout to turn the team around. The question is whether or not the owners can get out of his way and let him fix things.
