Background on every reported Cleveland Browns head coach candidate
By Dan Justik
Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll
Brian Daboll has been around the NFL for several years, including six seasons as a NFL offensive coordinator. He also spent one season as a co-offensive coordinator with the University of Alabama in 2017. The Crimson Tide won the National Championship in Daboll’s lone season at Alabama.
Daboll has spent the past two seasons as the Bills offensive coordinator. The 44-year-old has been tasked with helping the development of 2018 first-round pick Josh Allen. After struggling as a rookie, Allen made a significant leap in 2019.
In 2019, Allen improved his quarterback rating from 67.9 to 85.3 and his completion percentage from 52.8 to 58.8. His interception percentage also improved from 3.8 percent to 2.0 percent. If Daboll becomes the Browns head coach, he will once again be tasked with helping the development of Baker Mayfield.
Overall, the Bills offense was ranked 24th in the NFL this season, averaging 330.2 yards per game, and 23rd in scoring offense, averaging 19.6 points per game. Buffalo’s passing offense ranked 26th in the NFL and the rushing offense ranked eighth.
Daboll’s experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator and his help in developing Allen may make him an attractive candidate as the Browns try to continue to develop Mayfield. However, his lack of experience as a head coach could make it difficult for him to ultimately land the job.
The Browns will reportedly interview Daboll Sunday, January 5.
