Background on every reported Cleveland Browns head coach candidate

49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh
The San Francisco 49ers were one of the most surprising teams in the NFL in 2019, finishing the regular season with the No. 1 seed in the NFC. A lot of San Francisco’s success was propelled by the smothering defense led by Robert Saleh.
Saleh is in his third season as the 49ers defensive coordinator and is having the most successful season. San Francisco had the second-best defense in the NFL in 2019 and the eight-best scoring defense. The 49ers boasted the best passing defense in the NFL, allowing only 169.2 passing yards per game.
The 40-year-old is viewed as a great leader who is able to get the most out of his players. Saleh is a fiery coach who is a visibly energetic coach when on the sidelines. He also comes from a good coaching tree after spending three seasons with Pete Carroll in Seattle and several years with Gary Kubiak in Houston.
Saleh adopted the Cover 3 defensive scheme during his time with Seattle and the additional three seasons under former Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley in Jacksonville. Saleh has been in the NFL since 2005, spending most of his time as a defensive quality control coach and linebackers coach.
The Browns will reportedly interview Saleh on Saturday, January 4.
