3. Drew Stanton, QB

There’s been more talk about Drew Stanton than most third-string quarterbacks get. That’s because he’s been credited for helping keep Baker Mayfield grounded on the sidelines. The veteran does serve in a mentor role and has been a good sounding board for the young face of the franchise.

Having said that, Stanton will be 36-years old and spent this season on the injured reserve with a knee injury. It’s unlikely they will get much out of him in the future and he was outplayed by Garrett Gilbert in training camp heading into the season.

Add in the fact that Stanton was making more than $3 million last season and they really would be better off sticking with Gilbert as the No. 2 and possibly adding a late-round or undrafted rookie as a third option — which would count much less against the cap.

Now for those who love the fact that Stanton is so good with Mayfield, then bring him back as a coach, a move that makes sense for two reasons. One, it’s pretty safe to assume he will be a better quarterback coach than Ryan Lindley. Two, his salary in this role won’t count against the cap and they haven’t been using him as anything more than a de-facto coach anyway.
