Jimmy Haslam could get told ‘no’ by candidates

Since buying the Cleveland Browns in 2012, Jimmy and Dee Haslam will be hiring their fifth full-time head coach. Hue Jackson has been the only head coach in that span to be with the team for more than two seasons. And now candidates are more than well aware about Haslam’s track record.

According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, unless Haslam promises a head coach candidate that he will allow the head coach to do his job, there is a good possibility Haslam will be told “no” by candidates if he offers the candidate the head coaching job.

Haslam has shown he does not have much patience for a head coach to build a culture or a program. Unless the head coach can show a rapid turnaround with the team, Haslam will fire the head coach, even if it is only after two seasons. Two head coaches have even been fired after only one season under Haslam, including his first head coaching hire, Rob Chudzinski.

Breer notes that Haslam’s largest problem is he listens to so many opinions that his thinking can be swayed easily. Without a central voice going to Haslam, he can be swayed into several decisions by differing people.

Haslam is going to have to learn to be patient if he wants to hire some of the top candidates available. Candidates are already saying no to Browns interview requests, so Haslam is going to have to show he can be committed to a coach. If not, Cleveland is going to have trouble getting their No. 1 option.
