4. A run-stuffing defensive tackle

In the past two years, the Browns really struggled to stop opposing running backs. In 2019, they were the third-worst team against the run according to Pro Football Reference giving up 2,315 yards. Only the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals were worse, but less than 70-yards separated Cincy from Cleveland. That was a drop from 2018 when they gave up 2,163 yards which meant they were the fifth-worst in the NFL that year.

However, when you go back to 2017, they were much better against the run, surrendering just 1,566 yards which actually put them at No. 7 in the NFL. The biggest difference between 2017 and the past two seasons has been the lack of a big run-stuffing defensive tackle.

This isn’t saying trading away Danny Shelton completely destroyed their run defense because there’s so much more that goes into it than that. However, it’s no secret that having a guy that big and strong makes a difference when trying to clog up gaps and shut down the run game.

In addition to adding depth all over the defensive side of the ball, the Browns need to find a big run-stuffing nose tackle. Whether they do that in the draft or free agency, Cleveland needs someone who can play that role on early downs.

Right now, Larry Ogunjobi and Sheldon Richardson are on the roster and they’re both good but they also play similar styles. Someone who is there simply due to his power would be welcomed as well.
