49ers safety Jimmie Ward

Both safety positions will be a need this offseason for the Cleveland Browns, especially if the new front office decides to let Damarious Randall walk in free agency and make Morgan Burnett a cap casualty after his Achilles injury.

Jimmie Ward will be one of the top free agent safeties offseason after playing well on a one-year, prove it deal in 2019. After struggling with injuries since being drafted in 2014, Ward had the best season of his career.

In 13 games in 2019, Ward made 60 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and eight passes defensed. He has also made seven total tackles in two playoff games this postseason.

Ward can be utilized in several areas of the field, but predominantly played as a free safety in 2019. The time at free safety allowed Ward to fly around the field and become a playmaker for a dominant 49ers defense.

The Browns will be hiring 49ers defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator Joe Woods as their defensive coordinator after the Super Bowl, and his familiarity with Ward may cause Woods to want Ward to join him in Cleveland. With the Browns lacking much top-end depth at safety, Ward will make a lot of sense as a top target for Cleveland in free agency.
