Round 7, Pick 221: Kevin McGill, CB, Eastern Michigan

In each of the past two seasons, the Browns have spent premium draft picks on the cornerback position. In 2018, they added Denzel Ward from Ohio State with the No. 4 overall pick. He wound up having a good rookie season, which ended with him making the Pro Bowl. In 2019, they traded up to the No. 46 pick to take Greedy Williams from LSU — this was their first pick in the draft as they traded their first-rounder to the New York Giants in the deal for Odell Beckham, Jr.

Williams didn’t have as much success as Ward did in his rookie season but he did show some flashes and has plenty of talent. These two should have the starting positions locked down for the foreseeable future. Behind them, Cleveland still has some capable players in T.J. Carrie and Terrance Mitchell. Each has had their ups and downs but have been quality free-agent additions.

Not everyone will agree with that assessment, but what cannot be ignored is the team’s need for depth at this critical position. Cleveland’s secondary has been snake-bitten the past two seasons as Ward missed three games in 2018 and another four this past season with injuries.

Mitchell missed eight games in 2018 as he was on the IR and then reactivated and missed one more game in 2019. Williams was also battling injuries, missing four games in his rookie campaign with a hamstring injury. Carrie has been the only healthy one — playing in all 32 games over the past two years.

Knowing they will likely have to turn to the bottom of the roster, the Browns try and add as much talent there as possible. With that in mind, they grab Eastern Michigan’s Kevin McGill. He has the size at 6-foot-2 and 200-pounds but is raw — and in addition to that, he played at Eastern Michigan which means he didn’t face elite talent often.
