Round 1, Pick 16: Josh Jones, OT, Houston

Trade: Browns get pick No. 16, No. 78
Atlanta Falcons get Browns pick No. 10

The Browns traded down in this mock, landing the Atlanta Falcons No. 16 pick in the first round and 78th pick in the third. It would have been nice to get a little more, but the drop off from No. 10 to 16 isn’t great in terms of talent and there’s a shot to land someone who could develop into a starter with the No. 78 pick.

And the best part of the deal is the player I really wanted to land was still on the board in Josh Jones. The Houston offensive tackle is a quick-riser and really stood out recently at the Senior Bowl. Videos of him surfaced all over social media, with the PFF Draft team really enjoying his work.

Jones isn’t just some flash in the pan that’s shining at Senior Bowl drills either. This is a kid who started for several years for the Cougars and was able to dominate with his size (6-foot-5 and 311-pounds) and strength.

Still, he’s not mentioned among the elite prospects because he didn’t get enough work in pass protection in this offense and his technique has been called into question. He showed in Mobile that those concerns aren’t major.

For the Browns, this gives them their anchor on the offensive line. Currently, Greg Robinson is manning the position and he left a lot to be desired. Jones would be an upgrade over him right away and will only get better as he gets work in the NFL — especially with Bill Callahan working with him in Cleveland.
