Unrestricted Free Agents

Unrestricted free agents are players with more than four accrued seasons in the NFL. The original team does not hold any rights with the player once the free agency period begins, meaning the player can sign with any team he desires.

Eric Murray, Safety

Acquired in April 2019 in the Emmanuel Ogbah trade, Eric Murray was one of the biggest surprises of the season. Cleveland utilized Murray as their extra defensive back in their 4-2-5 defense. Although he never became a big playmaker for the defense, he was solid in coverage and was solid when on the field.

In nine games, including four starts, Murray made 23 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and one pass defensed.

The Browns will be on the lookout for safeties, especially versatile safeties. Murray’s ability to play both at safety and cornerback is beneficial in today’s NFL. If Joe Woods feels like he will fit into his defense, a cheap one-year, prove it deal for Murray would make a lot of sense.

Juston Burris, Safety

The Browns were put into a dilemma when they were down multiple safeties due to injury in the middle of the season. They signed Juston Burris out of necessity and threw him into fire. Surprisingly, Burris held his own and even made some plays for the Browns defense.

In 14 games, including nine starts, Burris made 30 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, two interceptions and seven passes defensed.

Burris made several plays for the Browns defense and became a key role player by the end of the season. Cleveland should keep Burris as the team’s third or fourth safety and see if he can recreate his success in 2020.

Drew Stanton, Quarterback

Drew Stanton was signed in 2018 to be a mentor for Baker Mayfield and was not expected to be on the field often for the Browns. That certainly has been the case, as Stanton has not played a regular season snap for the Browns. Stanton is at the end of the career, and it is incredibly unlikely he will be on Cleveland’s roster in 2020.
