Replacing players isn’t easy and sometimes you don’t always get your first choice. You have to think their respective teams will try to retain Cory Littleton and Mychal Kendricks because of how valuable they are and all the Browns can do is hope that Simmons falls all the way to them in the draft.

Sometimes you have to bring in a proven player in the NFL and that’s where Blake Martinez comes into play. He is not nearly the caliber player of Schobert but he has been productive and was one of the leading tacklers in the league in 2019.

But the tape tells a slightly different story, Martinez is small for the position and gets blown backward when lineman get their hands on him. He doesn’t have elite speed or coverage skills but is always willing to stick his nose in things, that’s why he’s had at least 140 the past three seasons.

Martinez could easily come in and be the starter and he is similar to Schobert in pass coverage although Schobert is better at shedding blocks. He wouldn’t have nearly the same impact in the locker room but will likely cost less on the open market than Schobert.

This would seem like a move to help save money if the Browns did it, which is possible with some of the players they have to pay in the near future like Myles Garrett, Baker Mayfield, and Nick Chubb.

Martinez makes sense and might be available and it might not be for a very high price. If that happens the Browns could get great value in the 26-year-old linebacker.
