Round 3, Pick 90: Jeremy Chinn, S, Southern Illinois

Before the 2019 season began, the Cleveland Browns had themselves a mini-drama to deal with. Running back Duke Johnson was unhappy with his role that was about to be diminished with the arrival of Kareem Hunt. With the former NFL rushing leader on the roster, Johnson was going to fall to third on the depth chart.

Cleveland wanted to keep him around though because Hunt was suspended for eight games. Ideally, they were going to use Johnson as the No. 2 guy until Hunt was reinstated. Then Duke would fall to the back and hardly see the ball.

Naturally, he wasn’t thrilled with this arrangement and let it be known. At first, the Browns seemed inclined to keep him around anyway but they finally started to shop him once a hamstring injury kept him off the field for OTAs and training camp. And despite the fact that he had one foot out the door, the Houston Texans decided to overpay and give up what ended up being a third-round pick for Johnson.

In the end, it was best for the player and the team as the Browns landed a great pick and Johnson returned to the role he served in Cleveland. And now with that pick earned for Johnson, Cleveland fills another need by selecting Jeremy Chinn out of Southern Illinois.

A great playmaker for SIU, Chinn is a massive safety at 6-foot-3 and 219-pounds. Had he played for a Division I program, he wouldn’t be available this late. But the Browns are fine with that as they get a potential starter for a bargain price here.
