Cleveland Browns top-five free agent signings in franchise history
By Clay Goodwin
4. Kevin Zeitler, Offensive Guard
Right guard Kevin Zeitler was one of the better signings the Browns have made in recent past. Cleveland signed the former Bengal to a huge contract after the 2016 season, which made him the highest paid guard in the league at the time. He came into Cleveland and helped solidify the middle of the offensive line.
Zeitler played for the Browns for just two seasons, but played 100 percent of the snaps in both years. He is considered one of the best guards in the NFL, which makes it confusing why he has not earned Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors. Despite that, he has been incredibly consistent for every team he has been on.
The trio of Zeitler, J.C. Tretter, and Joel Bitonio combined to be an extremely reliable and talented group for the Browns. While tackle play may have been an issue, the interior line was one of the best in the entire league as a unit.
Zeitler’s stint with the Browns was cut short after the 2018 season. As much as his departure hurt the team, and still does, he was sent in exchange for defensive end Olivier Vernon and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Zeitler was incredible in his two years in a Browns uniform and even allowed the Browns to acquire excellent talent in a trade. He is certainly one of the best free agent signings the Cleveland Browns have made.
