Cleveland Browns Draft Passes, the Never-ending List
By Greg Newland
2012 – Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi St, and David DeCastro, Guard, Stanford
The Browns had two first-round picks in 2012 and let me tell you, they hit home runs on both. At No. 3, they drafted Trent Richardson, the Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Alabama. At pick 22 they then took the 27-year old rookie from Oklahoma State, Brandon Weeden. Neither had any success in Cleveland, with Richardson out after one full season and Weeden only lasting two.
The Browns could have landed Fletcher Cox instead of Richardson, or David DeCastro instead of Brandon Weeden. Cox has started every game six of eight seasons with five pro-bowls and one all-pro season. DeCastro has missed four games the last seven seasons with five pro-bowls and two all-pro seasons. Ouch, this one hurts!
2013 – DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The Browns are now up to three big misses in a row with Barkevious Mingo being selected No. 6 in 2013. The defensive end from Louisiana State University was undersized for the NFL and not quite athletic enough to make the switch to outside linebacker. In three seasons with the Browns Mingo was never a starter and has since bounced around the league as a strong special teamer and specialty pass rusher.
With the 27th pick in 2013, the Houston Texans drafted star wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins. The four-time pro-bowler and three-time all-pro receiver has had over 1,000 yards receiving in five of seven years. Hopkins has also had three seasons of double-digit touchdowns and constantly requires a double team. Hopkins outperformed his expectations but is another star the Browns passed on.
