Round No. 2, Pick No. 41: Grant Delpit, S LSU

Almost every full Browns mock draft that you will find have the Browns drafting Minnesota free safety Antoine Winfield Jr. in this spot. I broke that trend.

The Browns have not had a legitimate solution at strong safety since Gregg Williams finally allowed Jabrill Peppers to move closer to the line of scrimmage. Last year, the Browns signed Morgan Burnett to fill the void once Peppers was dealt to New York in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

While the story of LSU’s historic season was undeniably Joe Burrow and their fiery offense, Delpit was still able to secure the 2019 Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. He’s incredibly physical and versatile, but strong safety is the position he thrives in.

For a player as smart, physical and aggressive as Delpit, his tackling is frustrating and that is why he can possibly fall to the Browns in the second round. Delpit is an incredibly fast mover, but gets hesitant to throw himself into tackles at times, cutting low and missing easy plays.

This is the perfect pick for the Browns because of the addition of Karl Joseph, who is a ferocious tackler. Delpit could learn something from him and serve as the heir to the throne at safety for the Browns.

In 2018, Delpit broke his clavicle, but came back as the best defensive back in the nation. That won’t scare teams away because he’s a rare blend of skills at his position and has drawn comparisons to Eric Berry. While I really would like a top-tier linebacker here, it did not happen in this simulation. Patrick Queen, Kenneth Murray, and Malik Harrison had all been drafted.
