1. Scheme/Coach

Last year, Freddie Kitchens and the Cleveland Browns did not have a good offensive scheme or success calling plays. For the first drive or so when plays were scripted, the Browns looked awesome. The rest of the game, however, was ugly.

Kitchens was said to give up on schemes the coaches had drawn up and planned for the week. He would lead the offense the rest of the game with no plan and players did not know what the plan was. Kitchens never seemed confident calling plays in 2019 and it cost the Browns in several contests. Calling a draw on 4th and nine against the Rams or going for a touchdown too early in the clock before halftime against the Seahawks which resulted in an interception and points for Seattle are just two examples of poor play calling and planning. Kitchens never liked taking a shot to OBJ when he was in a 1on1 matchup, which he wins more times than not.

In 2020 the Browns will be led by new coach Kevin Stefanski. Stefanski will bring in a new system composed of wide, zone runs and elaborate play actions. He will be a run-first coach, but will open up huge plays for receivers and tight ends in play-action and through creativity.

Stefanski had similar personnel in Minnesota with running back Dalvin Cook, and two good receivers Stefon Diggs and Adam Theilen. Now he has even better players at those positions in Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt at RB and OBJ and Landry at WR. He also loves to run two-tight end sets and the Browns have great receiving threats in David Njoku and newly acquired two time Pro Bowler, Austin Hooper.

OBJ will get open looks because of Kevin Stefanski’s system. He will run each play like it’s a run and it keeps the defense on their toes. OBJ will get plenty of opportunities in the short passing game, boot-legs, and the deep ball which Minnesota really had success with.

Stefanski is a huge upgrade for offensive scheme over Freddie Kitchens. Beckham Jr. will reap the benefits of the new system that fits right into his strengths.

With a full offseason to prepare with the Cleveland Browns, Beckham will be able to better position himself for success. He can get his body fully healthy and allow him to run the routes that makes him so special. Training with Mayfield throughout the offseason will allow the two to develop a connection on the field. With the help of head coach, Kevin Stefanki’s system that includes play-action and down-field routes, Beckham will be able to thrive.
