Last second draft day analysis for the Cleveland Browns
By Greg Newland
Jeremy Chinn – Safety, Southern Illinois
To begin this, the note was “Isaiah Simmons, no matter what,” but realistically that isn’t going to happen for Browns fans. Possibly my second favorite prospect in this draft (behind Simmons) is Jeremy Chinn, a safety from little known Southern Illinois University. After being a late bloomer in high school, Chinn didn’t receive a single D-1 college offer but was able to show his abilities in the Senior Bowl and at the NFL combine.
At 6-foot-3 and 221 pounds, Chinn is another large safety with great ball skills and the ability to play at the line of scrimmage. If Joe Woods looks to utilize the 4-2-5 scheme, Chinn could be a fantastic fit at the hybrid safety/linebacker position. Don’t forget, Chinn also ran an impressive 4.45 40-yard dash.
While Chinn may not be as dynamic as Simmons at this point, there is still a lot of raw talent to be developed. Man coverage skills appear to be his weakness at this point, but Chinn could be protected in the Browns scheme playing close to the line of scrimmage and pulling tight end coverage in one-on-one situations.
Pick No. 41 could be aggressive for Chinn, but look for his stock to continue to rise going into the draft. Antoine Winfield Jr. is the name many Browns fans are excited about, but I don’t look for him to make it out of the first round. Given Chinn’s size and athleticism, he would be a perfect fit for Joe Woods and would likely be a key part of the 2020 team. The Browns could look to trade back five to ten picks if they think Chinn will still be on the board and collect additional assets.
The Browns have a tremendous opportunity tonight to land a cornerstone player. While they may not get the exact tackle they want, there are three options that would all be tremendous fits and upgrades from 2019. It’s now time to sit back and see what magic Andrew Berry has left.
